Concrete pavers have been around for more than 60 years, conquering every market for pedestrian and vehicular pavements. For many years, the effort was dedicated to make pavers “good and adequate” for those applications, but time came when the industry was challenged to make them beautiful too, in order to gain new markets and to maintain the growth of sales. The concrete, pigments, admixtures and equipment industries have done a great job developing different ways to create variations based on existing concepts like shape, surface finishes and secondary processes to make a regular unit to look special. Pigments and coloured admixtures (superficial finishing colours), provide a radically different surface with very little, not to talk about the wet-and-dry mixtures to make pavers look the way the designer wants. All the already said depends of variations made to the units. But the enhancement can come not from the pavers themselves but from the contrast with adjoined units, through creative designs. Even conceptual designs can help to make pavers look darker or lighter than what they are.
