Concrete is an almost indestructible construction material. It has enormous strength and durability, which is the reason why structures made from concrete last so long. However, what is the situation when it comes to the surface of concrete, particularly where it is exposed to the environment? Concrete is constantly exposed to weathering and subjected to strong mechanical, physical, and chemical effects. Does the concrete surface cope with this easily? The answer is no! As with any material which has to withstand stresses of this nature, the concrete surface is also subject to normal wear, mainly in the form of weathering or abrasion. Processes inherent in the system such as the needle growth of the cement phases over time change the visual appearance of concrete surfaces – in general, such concrete turns pale.
