The present housing shortage in Brazil demands new (industrial) construction systems. In future a very large quantity of dwelling units will be needed in order to cover the requirement for up to 8 million units. Almost 60 % of the population are under 30 years of age, which means that the housing crisis will become even worse. The situation is exacerbated still further by the strong migration from rural areas. Jobs are very hard to find in rural areas, therefore more and more Brazilians are moving to the cities to look for work. Around two thirds of the Brazilian population lives in the cities. A variety of self-built dwellings with no infrastructure such as fresh water, drains or electricity has sprung up on the outskirts of large cities. These cheaply erected dwellings hold little comfort for the inhabitants.
