During winter months, immense damage is caused to concrete through repeated freezing and thawing cycles and the assault of de-icing salt. Frost means that any water bound in the concrete’s capillary pore system is transformed into ice, which exerts pressure on the cement matrix and, as a consequence, generates concrete damage such as crack formation.
